Laura Kiaulenas was one of the most influential breeders of Harlequin great danes the United States has ever known. Based in Farmingville New York, Laura started her breeding program in the early 1960's.

Laura was introduced to the breed when she was 7-8 years old. Her first love was actually a fawn bitch named Kathy who was owned by a neighbor that was also a breeder and exhibitor. Through Fred Finkle, Laura was introduced to the world of showing and accompanied Mr. Finkle to Westminster where she fell in love with his newly imported harl bitch CH Heide Von Meistersinger.

At 16 Laura finally got her first dane, a grand-daughter of Heidi. From this breeding illustrated below, Laura brought home her first great dane and started a legacy.

BMW was selected because Laura wanted a name that would make clear the color of the dane. Black, Merle and White. Some of her early dogs, which were what we refer to now as mantle were identified as B & W.

By the late 80's BMW had produced close to 30 champions. This is quite an accomplishment seeing how she only bred one litter a year and often only bred a bitch twice. Her dogs were all raised as house dogs and were obedience trained. Laura was not only successful in her breeding program, she was also a full time architect who split her time between her home in Farmingville and New York City. This did make things difficult and through the help of Holly Sayvets and many others, she was able to juggle both worlds.
